In recent years, indoor air pollution has become a serious health problem. Millions of people now suffer from breathing problems and lung illnesses due to the inhalation of such air contaminants as chemical fumes, cigarette smoke, pet dander, dust mites, dust particles, mold mildew, pollen, and more. To improve the quality of indoor air, more people are now choosing to install air purifiers in their homes and offices. There are a number of different types of air purifiers on the market, each with their own benefits. Two such purifiers are the Hepa Air Purifier and the Alive Air Purifier. When deciding which air purifier is best for your home or office, it is important to understand how each one works

HEPA (High Efficiency Particle Arresting) Purifier

Hepa air purifiers remove the smallest contaminants from the air. They remove 99.97% of all particles including bacteria, fungal and other microbiological organisms. It contains a filter that is composed of millions of small glass fibers. The tiny fibers of the HEPA filter capture airborne contaminants and prevent them from being dispersed back into the room. The HEPA air cleaners will normally have a life span of 1 to 2 years and then have to be exchanged. The Hepa filter can remove such contaminants as smoke fumes, mold spores, pollen, pet dander, dust mites, and can trap airborne particles 0.3 microns and larger. Filtering these impurities from indoor air will decrease the severity of allergies, asthma, and other breathing related conditions.

This is why HEPA air purifiers are the #1 choice for allergies and allergy relief amongst Doctors, Allergists and even members of the American Lung Association.

The Alive Air Purifier

The Alive Air Purifier incorporates the benefits of a HEPA air purifier but also makes use of 9 technologies to more thoroughly clean indoor air. The 9 technologies includes: (1.) a High-Performance HEPA Filter which captures harmful airborne particles as small as 0.3 microns and is 99.97% effective. (2.) An Activated Carbon Filter is effective at absorbing chemical and smoke fumes as well as odors. (3.) Ultraviolet (UV) Light Irradiation breaks down the molecular structure of mold, bacteria, viruses and other germs, rendering them harmless. (4.) Washable Electrostatic Dust Collector Plates is an electro-statically charged dust collector grid that traps pet dander, pollen, tobacco smoke, dust, and other harmful airborne pollutants. (5.) A Washable Pre-Filter removes dust and hair and extends the overall life of the air purifier. (6.) Dual Photo Catalyst Nano-TiO2 Germicidal Sanitizers suppress the growth of harmful microorganisms including viruses, mold, dust mites, mildew, fungus, bacteria, and odors. (7.) Air Pollution Sensors monitors indoor pollution and adjusts system performance to maximize air-cleansing. (8.) Diagnostic Sensors alerts you when it is time to replace filters, the UV light, or clean the collector grid. (9.) Anion Continuous Negative Ion Generation returns the naturally occurring negative ions. It is effective at combating mold and decreasing fatigue, clearing smoke, and reducing carbon monoxide. The Alive Air Machine is an advanced system that thoroughly sanitizes indoor air while removing harmful airborne particles with HEPA and carbon.

Today, air purifiers have become a necessity for every home and office. Using an air filter can decrease or eliminate the causes of respiratory illnesses. Air purifiers are the best solution to combat poor quality indoor air.

Find out the pro's and cons of filterless wasable air purifiers. What is the best choice when choosing an affordable air purification system

Pro’s and Con’s of Filterless, Washable Air Purifiers

The rise of harmful airborne pollutants in our homes has resulted in a greater consumer demand for methods to improve the quality of our indoor air. In recent years, the instances of such health conditions as sleep insomnia, allergies, asthma, and other respiratory illnesses have increased significantly as a result of poor quality indoor air. More consumers are now using air purifiers to improve the quality of air in their homes. One such indoor air cleaner that has grown in demand are the Filterless Air Purifiers like the Oreck XL Air Purifier and ionic air purifiers.

Filterless air purifiers work by rendering airborne particles and toxins harmless. One popular purifier that does not have a filter is the ionic air purification system. The ionic air unit consists of two eclectically charged plates. One plate is used to charge the particles flowing through the unit. The particles are charged in an electrical field within the capturing unit. The second plate acts much like a magnet because of its opposite charge, and attracts the impurities. The particles collect on the second plate thereby preventing them from returning to the room. When impurities travel through the device, the structure of the contaminants is changed to render them harmless. Filterless air purifiers are effective at removing particles and also odors, smoke, and chemical fumes.

Washable Air Purifiers – What can they do?

There are some obvious benefits to using a filterless air purifier. Because it is does not have a filter, there are no filters to change which will result in considerable savings. The filtration of air in a filterless unit changes the constitution of the air so that the negatively charged ions snatch the particles from air. The collected impurities are then wiped off the plate with a moist cloth. The result is cleaner and fresher air. As well, because this type of air cleaner eliminates smoke, bad odors, and harmful fumes, you will no longer have to buy air fresheners. Another benefit of using these air cleaners is that they can be quiet when they are in use which makes them perfect for the bedroom.

Another type of filterless air purifier is the photocatalytic air purifier. These indoor air cleaners can destroy such airborne contaminants as bacteria, mold and mildew spores, and viruses. These contaminants can cause serious respiratory problems such as influenza and lung infections. The air cleaning units are very effective at destroying micro-organisms that cause respiratory infections.

But Do Washable or Filterless Air Purifiers Do a Good Job?

If you are looking to capture allergens, pollen, animal dander or dust then I would say no. The Ionic, photocatalytic air purifiers, like Oreck, will not do a good job. If however you are looking to remove smoke, odor and air pollution then it might suit your needs. In most cases a combination of HEPA, ionic and photocatalytic will cover more bases and give you more alive air from your air purifier.

For Healthy Air You’ll Need Plenty of help

The American Lung Association reports that indoor air pollution has increased significantly causing more people to be at risk of developing respiratory problems. The Environmental Protection Agency EPA also reports that “6 out of 10 homes are ‘sick,’” meaning the indoor air poses a serious health risk. Poor quality indoor air can result in a variety of health conditions such as allergies, bronchiole disorders, asthma, insomnia, migraines, and fatigue. It is now necessary for homeowners to protect their family members by taking measures to clean the air in their homes. For people who are looking for an effective way of cleansing their indoor air try to find an air purifier that uses as many of the 9 types of air purification as possible.

If you suffer from allergies, asthma, or any other respiratory problem, then you know how distressing it can be when there is a trigger that causes breathing difficulties. Research has shown that poor quality indoor air is a major factor in triggering breathing problems. Dust, dust mites, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), pet dander, chemical fumes, cigarette smoke, mold, pollen, mildew, viruses, and bacteria, can all float in the air we breathe.

Indoor Air Is More Unhealthy Than 30 years Ago

It has been estimated that the air inside of the average American home is at least five times more polluted than the air outdoors. This statistic is very troubling because we spend so much time indoors. These harmful impurities can have a serious impact on our health. Fortunately, consumers are now looking for ways to improve the quality of their indoor air. For millions of people, air purifiers have become a popular method of eliminating harmful airborne contaminants thereby improving the quality of air in their homes.

Air Purifiers Are Proven To Help Allergies and Asthma

A quality air purifier works by directing air through a filter. Air purifying mechanisms trap harmful airborne pollutants and prevent them from circulating through the room. The clean air sent back into the room is up to 97% contaminant free. The result is cleaner, fresher, and healthier indoor air. There are many health benefits to having an air purifier in your home or office. When harmful contaminants are removed from the indoor air, there is a decrease in such health conditions as headaches, congested air passages, asthma attacks, allergic reactions such as red watery eyes, and sinus congestion.

Air Purifiers May Also Help With Sleep Disorders

A quality air purifier will improve the quality of sleep. Negative Ions were researched extensively in Russia and France and found to effect REM sleep, brain chemistry, and even energy levels. My own personal experience is that the negative ions in my air purifier helps me sleep better and awake more refreshed.

If you have children, it is important that they breathe clean indoor air because they can develop health problems that can last a lifetime, plus it may help with brain development. It is even beneficial for pets. As well, by using air purifiers, you will reduce the amount of dust that gathers on the furniture. This makes cleaning the home much easier and faster.

Buyer Beware: Air Purifiers Quality Counts

The ultimate health benefit of using air purifiers is the ability to breathe better without inhaling the harmful airborne particles that cause illness. There are many different types of air purifiers on the market so it important to do your research to make sure that you are getting a quality air purifier that actually removes about 97% of the airborne contaminants (this means making sure you start with a HEPA type of air purifier). As well, it is important to be aware that some cheap air purifiers are not as efficient or effective.

How To Use An Air Purifier

To get the most out of air purifiers is to put one in the rooms that you spend the most time in, which is usually the bedroom, followed by the living room or home office. Today’s families are more prone to suffer from allergies, bronchial conditions, asthma, and other respiratory related conditions because of pollution. However a big cause of the increase in respiratory problems is also the indoor air we breathe. Today’s synthetic materials, floor glues, chemicals, and plastics are all problematic. Installing air purifiers will allow you to block harmful airborne contaminants that will drastically reduce respiratory illnesses and make you and your family much healthier and happier.

With thousands of air purifiers on the market, each with different features and different functions, you’re not alone in being confused. Even the prices of these air cleaners can be confusing - ranging from a couple of hundred to over two thousand dollars.

Are you “Air Purifier Confused?”

With so many different types available, it can often be hard for consumers to decide which one is best for them. All of these air purifiers work to some degree but some work better than others. Many of them will not meet your particular health needs. Before you select an air purifier, it is important to understand how they are rated.

How To Identify Your Air Purifier Needs

When considering an air cleaner for your home or office, you must first decide if you need it for allergen, bacteria, odor, or fume control. Or, would you prefer a unit that removes all airborne pollutants? Air purifiers are rated according to the functions they perform and well they perform for the following:

Allergies: If you are just looking for a way to reduce allergens such as pollen, than you will be looking for an air purifier that is rated as an allergen air purifier. The first choice for allergens is a HEPA air purifier (watch the Hepa Air Purifier video) because it contains a filter that captures and removes allergens. You should have an air purifier that is rated effective at removing large particulates such as pollen, as well as having a filter that removes smaller allergens such as pet dander. A quality air cleaner should be able to remove particles from 0.3 to 5 microns in size. The better rating an allergy relief air purifier has, the better it is at cleansing the air of a variety of different airborne allergens.

Viruses, Germs, Mold and Immunity: Air purifiers are also rated on how well they remove certain airborne contaminants. For instance, machines using ultraviolet light are designed to kill bacteria, mold spores, and other microorganisms. These air cleaners are tested for how efficient they are at killing different types of microorganisms. Units with a high rating indicate they are effective because there dosage is a high enough strength to sufficiently kill airborne microorganisms. Units with a low rating will not be as effective.

Odor and gas: Air purifiers are tested to see how efficient they are at removing chemical fumes, cigarette smoke, and unpleasant odors. Gas molecules are very small at 0.001 and smaller. Units that successfully remove the majority of the fume particulates in a pre-filter and then the gases and odors are removed by a gas filter will have a high rating. Quality air purifiers that have activated carbon which contain tiny pores will be able to absorb the tiniest gas molecules. Another method of gas and odor removal is through chemical absorption. The gas molecule is exposed to a chemical agent, which breaks down the gas molecule into a harmless byproduct.

When rating air purifiers, room size, noise level, reliability, airflow, warranty, guarantee, and how well the air purifier performs (filtration) are assessed. Some of the highest rated air purifiers are those that utilize all of the technologies that remove all of the different types of airborne pollutants that include the microorganisms, allergens, chemical fumes, and smoke. Here’s a helpful video for determining the right brand:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzLmRaNxYIk.

It is important to make sure that the air purifier you choose can filter all of the particles that you want removed from the air. In most cases you will find that the better and more advanced the technology, the higher the price. However, the price is often worth it as they can better cleanse the indoor air of your home or office.

Find out why a whole house air purifier my not be the right choice. There could be serious health concerns flowing through your entire house..

Problems With Whole House Air Purifiers

Whole House Air Purifiers are are installed in the home’s ventilation system. Installation of the air purifier is done by connecting the system to the home’s heating and cooling system. These purifiers work by cleansing the indoor air that includes removing harmful airborne contaminants.

However several problems exist with whole house air purifiers:

#1 Poor Air Flow: Heating and Air Conditioning Ducts are generally designed to move hot and cold air into the room, not to circulate air in and out of the room. The proof is that you find dust in the rooms of your house, even though you already have a filter on your heating/cooling system.

#2 Lack of Sufficient Fan Power: Heating and A/C Ducts can direct cleaner air into the room but do not have sufficient draw of air to recirculate dirty air.

#3 Lack of Cleaning Ability: Even with a better HEPA filter, UV or Ozone unit in your heating ducts the circulation within the room will not be strong enough to extract dust or bacteria within the room. (However the heating ducts themselves will be cleaner and more sterile as they move air into the room)

#4 Higher Energy Costs: You would need a fan blower motor about 5 times the strength of the typical air duct system to clean each room as efficiently as a small unit. This motor would use a lot of energy, and increase heating and cooling bills. Also the air ducts would have to be modified to circulate air better than the typical duct system designed in your home.

Small Air Purifiers Work Better

On the other hand small single Room Air Purifiers allow for:

#1 Better Air Flow: By creating a circular flow of air in the room they can extract dust more effectively. Air Purifier with HEPA filter units are best for removing and trapping dust.

#2 More Air Moving Power: For clean air the air needs to be circulated efficiently, and in a circular motion, 1-4 times per hour. This can be regulated with single room air purifiers.

#3 Cleaner, Healthier Air: Air Purifiers that sanitize the air via UV light and tio2 must be in close contact with the air to be effective.

#4 More Energy Efficient: Like a zoned heating system you can reduce energy costs by having an air purifier on in the most used rooms, like the bedroom and living room or home office. Brushless Motors, like those found in the 9-technology Alive Air Purifier, use very little energy yet circulate air quietly and efficiently.

The whole house purifier is a great idea, but (unfortunately) because of the problems mentioned above an air purifier in each room is a better choice. More control over the air quality conditions with a small air purifier saves energy bills, and does a better job.

Brazilian hospitals now commonly use negative ion generators to treat breathing problems, after a test involving 36 children with asthmatic allergies. In each case, the problem was consistent or crippling. During the treatment, only one of them suffered an asthma attack. Afterward, no attacks were suffered by any of the children that sustained regular negative ion therapy (Soyka, 1991).

In 1966, a hospital in Jerusalem conducted a study involving 38 babies, between the ages of two and twelve months, with about the same degree of respiratory problems. The babies were separated into two groups of nineteen. One group was treated with nothing but a negative ion electronic air cleaner, while the second group was administered the standard treatment, which included drugs and antibiotics with side effects. The babies in the group treated with the negative ion air purifier were cured of asthma and bronchitis much more quickly than those in the control group. The babies in the negative ion group were also found to be less prone to rebound attacks. Less scientifically, doctors found that the babies treated by negative ion-enriched air didn’t cry as often or as loudly. But as Fred Soyka, the author of The Ion Effect puts it, “there is nothing subjective about a bawling baby” (Soyka, 1991).

“Monotonous Regularity”
In 1975, an East German doctor, who had by then treated more than 11,000 individuals with various respiratory conditions with a negative ion electronic air cleaner, said that his patients reported with “monotonous regularity” that the therapy had worked (Soyka, 1991).

You gotta like these odds
In the early 1960s, Dr. A. P. Wehner used negative ion generators to treat over 1,000 patients in the U. S. suffering from various respiratory ills, such as bronchial asthma, pulmunary emphysema, laryngitis, bronchitis, dry hacking cough, upper respiratory tract infection, and allergies. He reported that the symptoms completely disappeared in 30.3% of the cases, improved significantly in 42.3% of the cases, showed some improvement in 20% of the cases, and showed no signs of improvement in 7.4% of the cases (Wehner, 1962).

It’s all in the numbers
In Britain, two Oxford University statisticians conducted a study among victims of asthma, bronchitis, and hay fever. The sample was randomly selected from a list of people who had purchased a negative ion air purifier. Through interviews, they found that 18 of 24 asthmatics, 13 of 17 bronchitis sufferers, 11 of 12 hay fever victims, and 6 of 10 suffering from nasal catarrh, reported that the product had noticeably improved their condition. A few even reported that it cured their condition (Soyka, 1991).

When a negative is better than a positive
Postive ions, which occur in high levels in many indoor environments, inhibit the body’s ability to prevent pollutants and contaminates from entering the vulnerable areas of the respiratory tract. However, an overdose of negative ions has proven to provide counteraction to this effect (Kreuger, 1974; Soyka, 1991; Tchijewski, 1960).

Your Unhealthy Home – Why Unhealthy Indoor Air Requires an Air Purifier
By Mark E. Richardson

Is the inside of your home contributing to disease?

Air Pollution accounts for over 2 million deaths per year in the world. While most of this is due to cooking fumes and improper use of gas heaters you should also be aware of othe rdangers including chemicals (cleaning materials, etc.) and “outgassing” from synthetic materials (in carpets, new plastics, electronics,) that all affect the immune system of everyone.

If you spend any time indoors the odds are that your house is not an environment that supports you being healthy. Natural air, with natural substances like plants and trees which produce ions and oxygen from carbon dioxide, are simply the right materials for your body and for healthy living.

INDOOR AIR IS SIMPLY DEAD AIR!

The use of heating and air conditioning has several negative effects on your health:

#1 They rob life-giving negative ions from the air. Negative ions help a person breathe better. Waterfalls, ocean waves, and trees all produce high levels of negative ions. Negative Ions help us generate more energy, stay mentally sharp and can even effect depression. It positively effects breathing and is a must for people with respiratory problems like asthma

#2 Pollen , dust, dust mites thrive indoors. Other than vacuuming these immune system stressors thrive, grow and submit your immune system to stress every second. Heating and air conditioning ducts are perfect breeding ground, and can actually spread these items around.

#3 Air conditioning contributes to mold and mildew, which can cause a weakened immune system.

#4 Viruses, germs, bacteria and flu-like strains love the indoor environment. In fact they thrive.

#5 Heating contributes to dust mite proliferation.

Modern Materials and Building Supplies Contribute To Disease

Today’s homes use more new materials – composites, glues, chemicals, insulation, etc. – in construction. Homes built prior to 1950, besides radon and lead paint, can be healthier because they consist of more natural woods. Less chemicals equals a healthier environment.

If you consider insulation you probably think of savingprecious energy and money. But if you think of it in terms of health – even though it makes the indoor air more controlled – it also makes indoor air much more static and dead. Insulated air does not breathe.

How To Create A Healthy Home

In a perfect world homes would be built with natural materials, and built to resists germs and viruses. Air wuld flow freely through our home all the time to replenish negative ions and oxygen. Unfortuantely that is not a practical economic alternative. So what’s the answer?

An air purifier solves the problems of unhealthy indoor air only if it meets the following criteria:

1) Includes negative ion generation
2) Includes HEPA to collect pollen and dust
3) Includes Carbon to absorb VOC’s and chemcial gases
4) Includes UV to kill viruses and germs
5) Includes Tio2 to kill mold, bacteria, mildew, and viruses

Most major brands use only use 2-3 technologies.

Top ten questions about air purifiers and allergy relief...

with Julie Domino

Natural Health Practitioner Mark stopped by to answer our “Top Ten” questions from our “Air Purifier – Allergy Relief Questionaire”:

#10 Which air purifier type is best to relieve allergies?

Mark: It depends on what kind of allergies you have. For example: pollen and pet allergies are best helped by a HEPA air purifier. It is recognized by Doctors as providing the best relief. HEPA removes and holds allergens to .3 microns, or 99.97% of all airborne particles.

#9 What about Mold and Mildew allergies?

Mark: Great question! HEPA, although it removes mold spores, doesn’t kill Mold or Mildew. For that you will want to add UV and Tio2.

#8 How about Cat and Dog allergy relief?

Mark: A HEPA air purifier (for the hair and the dander) and a Pre-filter (a screen-like filter to catch hair, dander, and dust which also saves the life of the HEPA)

#7 How about for an allergy to dust?

Mark: HEPA, to gather dust, and a Pre-filter to capture hair and dust before the HEPA filter to help it last longer.

#6 How about the Oreck Air Purifier?

Mark: The best selling unit does not have HEPA and relies on “electrostatic” or “Truman Cells” as they call it. Same thing. It won’t hold allergens, hair, or dust, or kill mold very well. The static from it might hold a few hairs but to remove pollen you have to catch it. It is not effective in my opinion for allergens.

#5 How often should a person change a HEPA filter in an air purifier?

Mark: It depends on the size of the filter. The average HEPA should last 10-12 months with normal use. The exception is with smoke or alot of dust. (note: Many air purifier companies charge too much for the replacement HEPA after you make the initial purchase of the air purifier itself. So check replacement prices first before buying. A good sized HEPA filter (10×10x2 or larger) shouold be in the $30-50 range.

#4 How long should it take to be effective?

Mark: Assuming that you have the right technology several hours should be enough to notice a difference. This depends on what you are trying to remove of course. Mold or mildew may take 6-7 hours to clear.

#3 How much should a good air purifier cost?

Mark: So many air purifiers are overpriced – making this a good question. To treat a Living room or bedroom I wouldn’t spend more that $3-400 for an air purifier with HEPA, UV and at least 2 more technologies.

#2 Should I run it all the time?

Mark: You can run it all the time – but to save electricity I’d consider air purifiers with allergen and dust sensors. These sensors (Japan) adjust the air purifier to the conditions in the room – saving electricity and guesswork.

#1 Which do you recommend?

Mark: Rather than the typical 2-3 technology air purifier units you find there is a new 9-technology air purifier with HEPA, UV, Tio2, Ion, Carbon, Electrostatic and more. The video below shows it in action:

University of Michigan tests show short-term exposure to fine particle air pollution can drive up high blood pressure, raise risk of heart attack

ANN ARBOR, Mich., Sept. 8 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — It’s well known that measures such as exercise, a healthy diet and not smoking can help reduce high blood pressure, but researchers at the University of Michigan Health System have determined the very air we breathe can be an invisible catalyst to heart disease.

Inhaling air pollution over just two hours caused a significant increase in diastolic blood pressure, the lower number on blood pressure readings, according to new U-M research.

The study findings appear in the current issue of Hypertension, a publication of the American Heart Association.

Nearly one in three Americans suffer from hypertension, a significant health problem that can lead to heart attack, heart failure, stroke, and other life-threatening problems.

“Although this increase in diastolic blood pressure may pose little health
risk to healthy people, in people with underlying coronary artery disease this small increase may actually be able to a trigger heart attack or stroke,” says Robert D. Brook, M.D., lead author and vascular medicine physician at the U-M Cardiovascular Center.

In the study, researchers hoped to identify which air pollutants are harmful and how the pollutants work to damage the cardiovascular system.

Eighty-three people in Ann Arbor and Toronto were involved in testing and breathed air pollution, concentrated by a mobile air quality research facility, that was similar to what would be found in an urban environment near a roadway.

“We looked at their blood vessels and then their responses before and after breathing high levels of air pollution,” explains Robert Bard, M.S., overall research project manager.

Ozone gases, a well-known component of air pollution, were not the biggest culprit. Rather, small microscopic particles about a 10th of the diameter of a human hair caused the rise in blood pressure and impaired blood vessel function, tests showed. The blood pressure increase was rapid and occurred within two hours, while the impairment in blood vessel function occurred later but lasted as long as 24 hours.

It’s believed these fine particles deposit deep into the lungs and certain
components may gain entrance to the blood stream, or cause an inflammatory response throughout the body. There is also evidence that functions in the body’s nervous system are also disrupted.

The research is the latest in the relatively new field of Environmental
Cardiology which looks at the association between air pollution and heart disease. Brook says that at the very least the findings support efforts to maintain current ambient air quality standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency.

“It really bolsters and strengthens the importance of maintaining air quality for human health,” says Brook.

There are practical ways to avoid exposure to high levels of air pollution, such as avoiding unnecessary travel or commutes and not exercising during rush hour, or near busy roadways, Brook says. In modern society, the burning of fossil fuels is the primary source for air pollution.

“If air pollution levels are forecasted to be high, those with heart disease, diabetes or lung disease should avoid unnecessary outdoor activity,” he says.

California – Many families have increased concerns with protecting their loved ones from the growing number of West Nile Virus deaths. Some predictions have this virus spreading to thousands of people this coming fall. This has prompted several technology companies and scientific agencies to look for and create more effective ways to prevent the virus from spreading within the home and workplace.

One such Company is AliveAir.com which specializes in air purification and air cleaning. It has developed new nano-technology that assists in killing the West Nile Virus along with other forms of bacteria, germs, and pathogens.

CEO and spokesperson Mark Richardson of Alive Air had this to say:

“For several years we, along with our partners oveseas, were looking for new and improved ways to kill viruses and prevent their growth. Now UV light can be somewhat effective at killing viruses. To make it much more effective we introduced the use of Nano Titanium Dioxide (Tio2 nanotechnology grid) which magnifies the effect of UV light about a thousandfold – according to our researchers. The 9-stage AliveAir machine was created using UV and this new Tio2 for home prevention (watch the video at www.aliveairpurifier.com) of viruses, germs, bacteria, mold, and mildew. It represents an affordable and cutting edge way to keep your family safe from these diseases. Now we are working on a next generation of nanotechnology which is even more effective”

What The Center for Disease Control Recommends

Along with an air purifier like the Alive Air Machine there are other simple ways to prevent the West Nile Virus. The following link from The Center for Disease Controls lists a few: http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvbid/westnile/index.htm

Below is a video profile of the Alive Air Machine

Conclusion: HEPA Air Cleaners are just one of 10 types of air purification, and while HEPA filters are certainly the most effective for gathering dust and pollen HEPA alone is not the ideal way to have the healthiest air possible.

Called HEPA, HEPA Purifiers, cleaners, or HEPA filters it all comes down to a fabric woven cloth which gathers dust and pollen. This video explains the pros and cons of HEPA air purifier filters, HEPA air cleaners.

HEPA Purifier & HEPA Cleaner Pricing

HEPA filters are relatively inexpensive to produce and yet many manufacturers charge alot of money for HEPA filter replacements. Some of the more expensive models like IQAIr charges $170-200 for their HEPA filters. Even some of the smaller HEPA air purifiers like honeywell and Holmes (we’re talking small air purifiers here) can charge $40-50 for a very small filter.

The average price is $58
The price should be $30-50

Negative Ions Create Positive Thoughts

July 29, 2009 –

It’s not love in the air, but the following may make you feel almost as good.

Negative ions are invisible, odorless molecules that we inhale in large quantity. Mountains, oceans, and waterfalls produce it in abundance. After we inhale them and they hit our bloodstream they produce biochemical reactions to increase serotonin, alleviating depression, relieving stress, and increasing energy.

So can an air purifier that produces negative ions do all that?

The Science of Ions

Ions are molecules that have gained or lost an electrical charge . They are created in nature as air molecules break apart due to sunlight, radiation, and moving air and water. You may have experienced the power of negative ions when you last set foot on the beach or walked beneath a waterfall. While part of the euphoria is simply being around these wondrous settings and away from the normal pressures of home and work, the air circulating in the mountains and the beach is said to contain tens of thousands of negative ions — Much more than the average home or office building, which contain dozens or hundreds, and many register a flat zero.

“The action of the pounding surf creates negative air ions and we also see it immediately after spring thunderstorms when people report lightened moods,” says ion researcher Michael Terman, PhD, of Columbia University in New York.

In fact, Columbia University studies of people with winter and chronic depression show that negative ion generators relieve depression as much as antidepressants. “The best part is that there are relatively no side effects, but we still need to figure out appropriate doses and which people it works best on,” he says.

Think of Negative Ions as Vitamins For The Brain

Negative ions increase oxygen flow to the brain bringing higher alertness, less drowsiness, and increased mental energy,” says Pierce J. Howard, PhD, author of The Owners Manual for the Brain: Everyday Applications from Mind Brain Research and director of research at the Center for Applied Cognitive Sciences in Charlotte, N.C.

“They also may protect against germs in the air, resulting in decreased irritation due to inhaling various particles that make you sneeze, cough, or have a throat irritation.”

If you feel instantly refreshed when you open a window and breathe in fresh air then you are teh one in three negative ions affects.

“You may be one of them if you feel sleepy when you are around an air-conditioner, but feel immediately refreshed and invigorated when you step outside or roll down the car window,” Howard tells WebMD. “Air conditioning depletes the atmosphere of negative ions, but an ion generator re-releases the ions that air conditioners remove.”

Creating More Negative Ions In Your Home

A negative ionizer, while often used for cleaning the air (it does have an ability to kill mold, smoke and some pollution) is often found as one technology in some air purifiers siuch as the “Alive Air Purifier“

The possible interaction of negative-air ion therapy and antidepressant drug or light therapy for seasonal depression has not yet been investigated, he says. ”It stands to reason, for example, that drug … dose could be tapered [even to zero], if the patient responds to negative ion exposure.

What About Allergies and Asthma?

There is now some good science behind the use of negative ionization for improving the lives of people who have breathing difficulties.

by Don Baker Lewis

Back in 1989 I bought my first air purifier. I couldn’t believe what a difference it made in my home. I could think better, breathe better, sleep better. Practically everything was better, because the air in my home was now clean, rather than polluted and toxic. The more research I did on air purifiers, the more I realized what a difference it could make in a persons health. Recent research shows that a lot of serious health problems are caused by the dirty, polluted air inside ones home or office.

Take a close look at this statistic: The air inside your home or office may be 2-5 times more polluted (and occasionally over 100 times more) than the air outdoors—according to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) studies of human exposure to air pollution. This is of major concern since many people spend 80% to 90% of their time indoors.

In the year 2000, the World Health Organization stated that more than 1.5 million deaths occurred because of indoor air pollution. I know it’s hard to believe, but that’s one death about every 20 seconds, worldwide. From indoor air pollution. Shocking, isn’t it?

Back in 1989 I become an instant convert to the incredible value of a really effective air purifier. The first device I purchased was a negative ionizer. I fell in love with it because of the way it charged the air with negative ions. Normally the air, indoors and outdoors, is way out of balance with too many “positive ions”. In this case, too many positive ions are not a good thing. What you want in your surroundings are a lot more negative ions. At the ocean or in the mountains you will find an environment rich with negative ions.

Witches Winds

Take a look at what authors Jim Karnstedt and Don Strachan say in their book, Negative Ions, Vitamins of the Air:

“When certain kinds of winds begin to blow throughout the world, hospital admissions, suicides, and crime rates skyrocket. One country-Switzerland- even accepts the blowing of the “Foehn” during the commission of a crime as mitigating evidence in court.

“These “notorious” desert and sea winds are also linked to minor illnesses and malaise epidemics. Victims’ claims range from sleeplessness, irritability, tension, migraines, nausea, palpitations and hot flashes with sweating to tremor, vertigo, swelling, breathing difficulty, and frequent intestinal movement. In addition, elderly persons are affected with depression. apathy, and fatigue…

“What causes these ‘witches’ winds.” as they are often called, to differ from others? What do they posses or lack that make them a dread to the lands or oceans they blow across?

“Nothing more than an imbalance of invisible, minute particles with an imperceptive electrical charge-positive and negative ions.

“According to the experts, positive ions rob us of our good senses and dispositions, while their counterpart, negative ions, enhance them, stimulating everything from plant growth to the human sex drive.”

The New Generation of Air Purifiers

Air purifiers have come a long ways since my first purchase of a negative ion machine back in 1989. Back then they had one or two air purifying technologies and that was it. Nowadays I use an air purifier that has 9 technologies built into this one machine. It’s called the Alive Air Machine. Not only does it include a Negative Ion Generator, but it also includes HEPA, UV, Nano-TiO2 Germicidal, an Activated Carbon Filter, an Electrostatic Dust Collector Plates and several other technologies for cleaning and diagnosing the air in your home or office. You can learn more about this unique air purifier at www.aliveairpurifier.com

One of the things I like about it the best is that it’s reasonably priced at under $300.

There is some new, solid evidence behind certain kinds of negative ion air purifiers that may relieve sleep disorders like insomnia.

I thought it was all in my head.

I always seemed to sleep better, more rested, and wake up with a lot of energy whenever I left my air purifier on all night. Well, it turns out that one of the technologies in the machine (AliveAir Machine) actually has some good science behind it that may help in overcoming sleep disorders. It might even help people who use sleep pills, insomnia and more.

Negative Ions

(Want More Science on Negative Ions and what they are ? Visit http://www.dynamind.com/whatareions.htm )

Here is some of the research about how negative ions can improve sleep and may help overcome insomnia:

Negative Ions help us to sleep better.

In 1969, French researcher found that the overproduction of the neurohormone serotonin caused sleeplessness and nightmares. In using a negative ion electronic air cleaner to treat a group of people experiencing sleeping problems as a result of serotonin overproduction, he found that most of them were able to sleep better (Soyka, 1991).

In 1957, a study published in the Journal of General Physiology concluded that negative ions reduce the overproduction of serotonin, a neurohormone that leads to exhaustion, among other things, when overproduced (Kreuger, 1957).

And here’s a video about Ionizers…

The Alpha wave rythms say it all
In 1969, Dr. Sulman, head of the department of Applied Pharmacology at Hebrew University in Jerusalem at the time, brought in groups of people to spend some time in a room low in negative ions, and also in a room that contained an “overdose” of negative ions. While in each room, subjects were given word, figure, and symbol tests. They scored “significantly higher” on these tests when they were in the negative ion-enriched room. Plus, while in the negative ion room, they showed (via the electroencephalogram) a slower, stronger pulse rate of Alpha waves from the brain. Alpha wave rythms are a measure of the brain’s acitivity and health. A slow, strong Alpha wave pulse rate indicates healthiness, calmness, and heightened alertness. When the subjects were in the negative ion-deficient room, they showed signs of irratibility and fatigue in addition to lower test performance (Sulman, 1974).

Other health benefits include…

Former NASA scientist James B. Beal, who came across the negative ion problem while studying the type of environment needed in space capsules, wrote: “The human race was developed in ionized air. Nature used the ions in developing our biological processes.” In other words, people have been designed to function properly in an environment that contains certain level of ionization (Soyka, 1991).

Negative ions are needed in order to take in oxygen.

“Please, we’re dying here!”
Russian scientist, Dr. A. L. Tchijewsky, tried raising mice, rats, guinea pigs, and rabbits in totally de-ionized air. Almost all of them died within two weeks due to an inability to utilize oxygen properly (Tchijewski, 1960).

Tchijewsky’s colleague, Dr. D. A. Lapitsky, tried raising small animals in air completely devoid of oxygen. He added only negative ions to the air as they were about to die from asphyxiation. At which point, their respiration frequency drastically increased, as they began to sit up and run around the chamber (Tchijewski, 1960).

Don’t travel to space without `em
Former NASA scientist James B. Beal, who came across the negative ion problem while studying the type of environment needed in space capsules, wrote: “The human race was developed in ionized air. Nature used the ions in developing our biological processes.” In other words, people have been designed to function properly in an environment that contains certain level of ionization (Soyka, 1991).

The more the better
Fred Soyka, author of “The Ion Effect” reports that based on the 5,000 plus scientific documents that have been published regarding negative ion studies, all support the conclusion that an overload of negative ions seems to be beneficial (Soyka, 1991).

Negative ions also help prevent migraine headaches.

Migraine headaches originate when an overload of serotonin causes the diameter of blood vessels leading to the brain to dilate, and get wider in the brain. Consequently, blood flow increases, and pain receptors in the vessels are stretched, which leads to the excrutiating pain associated with a migraine headache (Borne, 1998; others). In numerous tests and studies though, negative ion treatment has proven to prevent the overproduction of serotonin, and therefore the subsequent migraine headaches (Kreuger, 1957; Soyka, 1991; Sulman, 1974).

Negative ions are a natural anti-depressant.

. . . and without the side effects!
In a study conducted by Columbia University, 25 people with SAD (Seasonal Affective Depression) sat in front of a negative ion air purifier for a half hour every morning for a month. Half the subjects were given a low level of negative ions, and the other half a high level. The higher level of negative ion treatment proved to be as effective against SAD as antidepressants, such as Prozac and Zolof, and without the side effects of these drugs (Finley, 1996).

New Alive Air Purifier is designed to increase negative ions and improve your health 9 ways.

If you’re thinking of buying an air purifier that uses negative ions after reading this I would recommend reading my review on the Alive Air Machine AliveAir Machine . It is not only the quietest air purifier I have ever used but at $299 it boasts 9 technologies compared to the 2-3 of most air purifiers on the market.

by Don Baker Lewis

I know what you’re thinking: What’s he talking about? How does the seemingly harmless air inside my home or office lead to illness? I thought for a while before I used this title. After all it’s a pretty strong statement, and I don’t think of myself as an alarmist.

Take a look at what the World Health Organization found from their studies of human exposure to indoor air pollution: In the year 2000 more than 1.5 million deaths occurred largely because of indoor air pollution. That’s one death about every 20 seconds, worldwide. From indoor air pollution. Even if it’s only a fraction of that, it’s still shocking.

Some might take my headline a giant step further and call indoor air pollution…The Silent Killer. One thing I know for sure. It’s a big problem in our society today and it can create all kinds of health concerns.

Read What the EPA Has to Say on Their Website About Indoor Air Quality Concerns…
“In the last several years, a growing body of scientific evidence has indicated that the air within homes and other buildings can be more seriously polluted than the outdoor air in even the largest and most industrialized cities. Other research indicates that people spend approximately 90 percent of their time indoors. Thus, for many people, the risks to health may be greater due to exposure to air pollution indoors than outdoors.
“In addition, people who may be exposed to indoor air pollutants for the longest periods of time are often those most susceptible to the effects of indoor air pollution.”

Here’s another shocking bit of research: Indoor air contaminants cause or aggravate half of all illnesses. Yes, you read that right, HALF!

Modern buildings are constructed so tightly these days that allergens and pollutants are concentrated and trapped inside. This triggers allergy flare-ups and makes breathing difficult for those who suffer with asthma. The bottom line: Our indoor environment is not a very healthy place any longer, especially for those with allergies and asthma.

But NOW there’s an easy solution to getting relief…the right air purifier. One that’s designed to deal head-on with dozens of allergens, so you don’t have to.

Here’s the Problem with Many Air Purifiers
On the Market Today…They Fall Way Short!

Many of the air purifiers on the market are using 25-year old technology to ATTEMPT to clean the air. That’s ancient technology! They’re way behind the times. These air purifiers are simply not good enough to thoroughly clean the dirty indoor air. They just won’t cut it when it comes to purifying the air the way you’re hoping it can be purified. They fall way short.

But there’s an air purifier that’s come on the market recently that has 9 leading edge technologies built into it. It’s called the Alive Air Machine. Using the very latest, up-to-date-modern technologies, it was designed to cover all the bases in cleaning your indoor air, and eliminating as many triggers as possible for your allergies.

And you can purchase it for half the cost of a comparable brand name purifier.

Is the air in your home or office
only getting half clean?

If you want to really clean the dirty air inside your home and office you need ideally 5 or more of the very best technologies built into your air purifier. One, two or even three technologies won’t do. That’s not enough. The air is just too dirty. And yet that’s all the technologies being used in most of the air purifiers on the market today.

Imagine for a moment if you took your clothes to the cleaners and they came back a little cleaner than before, but still dirty. That’s what’s happening with many people today who are buying one or two technology air purifiers. Half clean clothes are not acceptable. Neither is half clean air.

The Alive Air Machine incorporates 9 technologies. It’s brilliantly designed to thoroughly clean the air inside your home or office.

For your family’s sake and your sake, don’t let indoor pollution be “the quiet road to illness”?
